A: An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is connected to your vehicle's ignition. It's supposed to require your breath sample before the engine will start. So if the IID detects alcohol on your breath, the engine will not start. As you drive, you are periodically required to provide breath samples to ensure the continued absence of alcohol in your system. Studies have shown that the use of an Interlock, when combined with a comprehensive monitoring and service program, leads to a 40-95% reduction in the rate of repeat drunk driving offenses among offenders as long as the IID remains on the vehicle.
In the state of Georgia an Interlock device is usually only required if a person is convicted of DUI for a second time within five years. It is very unlikely that a judge would order an Interlock on a car for a first DUI offense in Georgia.
