Woodstock DUI: I have low self-esteem

Question: I really don't think that I should have a DUI in Woodstock.

I was only driving because my boyfriend insulted me and I didn't want to be around him that night. We went to dinner at Tuscany Italian Restaurant in Woodstock and it was such a nice evening until he said that he thought my hair was too short. That's when I just left the table, got into the car and drove away. I was crying and I was speeding and a Woodstock cop pulled me over. I must have looked really bad because my eyes were bloodshot form crying, and I lost my temper and screamed at the cop.

Anyway, I was arrested for DUI. I took a breath test at the jail and I blew a .129. But I don't think I should have a DUI charge because I am being treated for low self-esteem. Because of the low self-esteem my therapist says I do things that I shouldn't. This was one of those times.

I think I developed low self-esteem because I was in an abusive relationship with a former boyfriend. He used to throw things at me and make me wear clothing that I didn't want to wear. And I have to deal with a lot of stress at work as a doctor; I'm a pediatrician, so that may be a contributing factor that causes self-esteem problems.

But I do have a mental issue, and I was wondering if that can help me not get a DUI? I really don't want to have a DUI.

Answer: Having a diagnosis of low self-esteem is not a good defense for a DUI. Low self-esteem (self-worth, self-regard, self-respect, and self-integrity are some synonymous terms) afflicts millions of Americans and it is positive that you are seeing a therapist to treat the problem. But it is not a legal defense to DUI.

We have many clients who have mental health issues, including depression, bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia, and you need to retain a DUI attorney who has familiarity with various mental disorders.

You need a Woodstock DUI lawyer to explain the issue to the solicitor. While that may not affect the DUI charge, it may help in reducing the conditions of your sentence.
