Forsyth County DUI: Is the police report secret?

Question: I have to write because I'm really worried about my husband. He was arrested in Forsyth County the other night for DUI. It's his first time being arrested and it's his first ever DUI. We can deal with that.

The problem is that he's worried about the police report. Because in the police report the Forsyth deputy sheriff wrote that my husband was wearing a woman's dress and high heeled shoes and had on a lot of makeup. So my husband thinks that he'll be embarrassed if the police report gets out and he's very worried that he could lose his job because his boss is very conservative.

The thing is that my husband isn't a cross dresser. He only wears women's clothes and makeup when he gets together with some of his college friends. They were all in the same fraternity and they just like to dress up like ladies a couple of times a year. My husband says it's no big deal and that a lot of guys do it. He explained that it's a football tradition. But he's petrified that other people will find out and not understand. He's so scared he's thrown away some really pretty dresses and expensive shoes.

Can anybody get the police report from Forsyth County? Please answer the question ASAP. We live in Cumming. I think police reports should be private.

Answer: Under the Georgia open records law, anyone can obtain a copy of the police report. That is not to say, however, that someone will, or that people will even find out about his arrest. But police reports are, except in rare instances, public documents and can be seen by anyone. The media often requests police reports for cases of interest.
