What is Probation Like for a DUI Charge in Georgia?

Q: I got a DUI in Georgia. What exactly is probation? What do I have to do?
A: In Georgia, when someone is convicted or pleads guilty to DUI, probation is ordered by a court. Probation allows the judicial system to have some control over a person while he is on probation. Sometimes probation is unavailable as part of a sentence. If a person is placed on probation, the term of probation can vary greatly. Probation can be ordered for 6 months or it can be for years. It depends on the exact criminal charges involved. Typically, for a first DUI in Georgia, probation is for one year. When more than one lifetime DUI is involved, probation can be for a longer period of time.

Instead of having to serve a full sentence in jail for a DUI, a person can be sentenced to probation instead.

A defendant normally has to complete the conditions of his sentence while on probation. There are also certain things a person may not do while on probation - for instance, drinking or getting into trouble with the law. A probation officer is assigned to monitor a person on probation. So if someone is convicted of DUI in Roswell, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Johns Creek, Woodstock, Forsyth County or Cherokee County or elsewhere, they will be sentenced to probation.
